Torticollis Treatment in Babies
What to Expect During your Baby’s Torticollis Treatment?
After an initial evaluation, the physical therapist will determine the main goals to work on based on the family’s concerns, the baby’s corrected age, and the baby’s strengths and challenges.
Physical therapy treatment for torticollis, focuses on improving neck mobility, facilitate correct alignment and promote developmental milestones through family education and environmental adaptations.
Generally, the PT session starts with mobility and passive exercises to loosen the muscle tension of the head, neck and shoulders, followed by gentle stretches. The work of the rib cage is also important because the abdominals and diaphragm can be affected by the tightness of the neck muscles. Subsequently, other torticollis baby exercises focus on achieving milestones such as rolling, tummy time, sitting and standing. Collaboration with the family is the most important component to carry over these activities at home, and to make the environmental adaptations and changes that are necessary for a successful PT intervention. The are torticollis baby exercises you can do at home as well.
