Exercise for Vertical Talus in Kids with Spina Bifida

In this video, we are working on postural reactions when walking forward and backwards on a balance board. This exercise not only promotes balance and coordination skills, but the activation of the calves. The calf muscles are one of the most important muscle groups for postural control in standing.

The activation of the calf muscles for this 3 years old girl is one of the goals for physical therapy because she was born with vertical talus and has a diagnosis of spina bifida. In the vertical talus, the talus bone has formed in the wrong position, and subsequently, the front of the foot points up and may even rest against the front of the shin. This means that the calves are overstretch and weak. By walking on an inclined surface, the calves get activated which will bring the tibia back and facilitate knee extension, which reduces the crouched gait in kids.
