Helping Your Baby to Roll Over
Helping your baby to roll is an important exercise for gross motor skills and stimulating the vestibular system. It promotes the activation of their muscles on both sides of the neck and trunk, as well as the head righting reactions which are important for visual skills and body awareness. This is also a foundation for future developmental milestone such as sitting, crawling, and walking.
When your baby is a newborn, help them from the hips, trunk and head to roll from back to tummy, providing good support to their head. Around 2 to 3 months old, your baby should have more neck strength, so allow them to do part of the work when turning and lifting their head up from the floor. Place a toy to the side as a motivation for them to reach and roll to that side.
